Thematic Photographic

I have just realized that I used the same photo that appears in the post below for a previous Thematic Photographic entry. Probably when the theme was "Up"? This week's theme is "Distant". You must admit, it is appropriate for both. But I have another photo which I believe also represents "Distant". I took this one looking across Cape May Harbor.


The bridge leading into Cape May can be made out on the far side of the harbor, if you try very hard to see it.

This picture that I took some time ago, up by the Delaware Bay, is one of my favorites. I think it is appropriate to the theme.

Thematic Photographic #54

Carmi, our host for Thematic Photographic, has decided on "Green" as our theme for this week. The word "green" has many connotations these days, starting with the political protestors in Iran, through environmental interests, and all the way to the wonderful, lush green colors of spring and summer.

It is the latter that I am presenting today. The first photo is one of our local roads. Each time I turn onto it, it makes me smile, no matter what the season.


The second is a lane that also makes me smile. It leads to green pastures.

Signs - that's the theme Carmi has chosen for this week's Thematic Photographic, at Written, Inc. I have always been fascinated with signs. I think some people feel I'm just a little crazy, because I do take a lot of pictures of signs.


I have three to show you. I've shown them all on my blog at one time or another. The first is one that I took in Pacific Grove, California. I think it is my all time favorite sign.



The other two were taken by my daughter, Kathryn, in Los Altos, California on a farm/nature preserve the family was visiting. I like them both very much.

Carmi brings us Thematic Photographic with a new theme each week. This week's theme is Human, and Carmi's first photo for the theme says it loud and clear. Go visit Written, Inc. and see for yourself.

My own contribution is here. It is of my cardiologist, explaining my echo cardiogram. (Yes, I am that much of a photonut that I asked if I could take a picture.)

Thematic Photographic #47

Carmi has given us the theme of Musical for this weeks Thematic Photographic. I think this theme is my favorite so far. I'm really looking forward to seeing what the participants show us.

I have many pictures inside my head that I wish I had taken to commemorate concerts and musicals I have attended. There is even one I so wish I had, of my best friend's violin lessons I sat through many times when we were children. But I don't believe I ever had a camera with me at those wonderful times. And if I had, I probably would have been so distracted by the music that I would not have thought of taking a photo.

But I do have these. One I took myself, experimenting with a toy keyboard, and the other his mother took at a friend's home, a lesson.

Thematic Photographic #46

Thematic Photographic is hosted by Carmi, at Written, Inc. His theme for this week is Round. I am using the same photo for this theme that I have just used for the brand new meme, Think Green Thursday.


More than one homeowner in our area has decided to think green, and start using alternate types of power for their homes. Some are going to solar panels. And some are using wind power. I think that the wind mill at a home up on the bay, spinning 'round and 'round should by an appropriate subject for Thematic's theme this week.

Thematic Photographic

This week's theme from Carmi at Written Inc. will be floral. I'm sure, with the start of spring, there will be many wonderful photos on this theme.

My offering will be two photos of my hummingbird feeder. I've already hung it outside my front door, even though it's early in the season and I've seen no hummers, because there have been sightings already in New Jersey. Since there are few flowers blooming for them to find, we should have some feeders full of nectar, just in case.


It has been hanging in the cold rain as well. Small and delicate as the hummers are, they do manage to fight the wind and feed, even in a downpour. They are amazing little birds.

Carmi decides the theme for each week's photos, at Written, Inc. This week the theme is Reflective.

I have two photos that I think reflect the theme. In the first, there are two meanings of the word. There are reflections in the water of course. But there is also that bench. I can easily imagine someone sitting there, staring at the water, reflecting on...who knows what?





Then there is this old photo of my little grandson and his two cats, looking out of the window. What goes through a little boy's mind? And what, indeed, are the cats reflecting upon?

My daughter took this photo, as her son and his little girl friend shared a drink. His was hot chocolate. Yes, he is drinking it with a straw, usually his choice with any drink. Silly kid!

I really did not intend to post another entry for "Winter", the theme for this week in Carmi's meme. But how could I not post our storm today? Especially since my first picture depicted a sled, waiting on a front porch, seemingly in futile hope for more snow. This is what I saw this morning when I tried to open my back door.

Thematic Photographic #38

This week's theme for Carmi's Thematic Photographic is Winter. Hopefully this will be the last such theme for a long time.

Hope is the thought behind my winter photo. I call it, Hoping for One More Snowfall. Personally, I'm hoping that the sled on the front porch of this house is waiting there in vain. The temperature today soared to 50 degrees, as I passed this house, but then, I can remember snow in April some years ago - so who knows?

Carmi, at Written Inc. hosts this meme each week. Thanks to him, there are always lots of fun photos on the theme of the week. This week it's Busted. Down here at the southern tip of New Jersey, that's an easy one for us. Right off Cape May Point are the remains of the SS Atlantus
(Yes, that's spelled right), which was a concrete ship. It sunk long ago, and what is left is just what is sticking out of the water in this picture. I've included the informational sign that stands on the shore near it. (Please click to enlarge) I'd say, that's about as busted as anything can get.

Thematic Photographic - Part 2

This week's theme us Up. You can see some very clever interpretations of Up in photographs if you visit Carmi at Written, Inc.


When I was visiting Leaming's Run Gardens this past summer, I sat for a while in the Gazebo, hoping to see some hummingbirds in the serpentine garden. While I sat there, I looked up, and since I liked what I saw, I took this photograph.

My offering for this theme is a picture I took of my daughter last year, taking a picture or the Cape May Lighthouse, through a tree. I will also show you the picture that she took.

Thematic Photographic #35 - Part 3

I seem to have found quite a number of photos I feel represent the theme of "Down". Carmi's Written, Inc. is where you will find others and where you can participate yourself.


These photos appeared on my blog last summer after a visit to Hereford Inlet Lighthouse. In the first one, my friend, Lisa and I were saying, "Is that a duck down under the steps?"


























And then Lisa and an employee of the Lighthouse gift shop were looking down at the duck.








The gardener came to put some water down for the duck to drink.



















And there she is, down under the bench, having a drink.




















It seems that she and the drake pay regular visits to the Lighthouse, and the employees always make sure that they receive grain and water.

My little grandson has always liked to get right down to it out of doors. For instance, here he is a few years ago, sitting in a hole that was dug to plant the young avocado tree seen beside him.



In this one, he is fascinated by a grasshopper. Sorry, you can't see the insect he is watching.




And in these pictures, he is helping to pick strawberries. And eating them, of course.

My first pictures on the theme were taken by my son-in-law a few years ago, of my daughter and grandson on a sliding board. First at the top, then at the bottom.

Thematic Photographic #34

My first photo on the theme is not one I took myself. I'm sure it was originally taken by a professional, soon after my husband's ancestors arrived in this country from Italy. These are the young cousins, children of my husband's grandfather and great-uncle. It's message is very simple: Most of these young people are holding an object, or in the case of the young lady, standing beside an object representing a skill. My husband's father is the youngest among them, and is holding a carved horse, which I assume was a favorite toy.



I did not take the second picture either. One of my daughters took it. It is a simple greeting, left in a place she had enjoyed, meant for whoever else might happen along.



My next picture represents a simple, spontaneous and affectionate act between another daughter, and my grandson, her nephew, more than three years ago.




And last, is the same grandson, growing up as you can see, with his pet. Again, showing a simple sign of affection - and something more, I think. His mother took this picture.




These are some of my favorite photographs. I think that each represents the theme of simplicity rather well, each in its own way.

Thematic Photographic

Carmi has given us our new theme for the week. It is Surprise.

My most recent surprise came when I brought my mandevilla plant inside to over-winter. It took off right away, and hasn't stopped growing, but in such an unusual and ridiculous way that I'm not sure what to do with it. I will be further surprised if it actually survives and blooms again in the spring. This is how it looked last week, but of course it's still growing, inches every day. I've been calling it my Dr.Seuss plant.




My next photo has appeared before, in the Camera Critters meme. I took this picture at Leaming's Run Gardens. It involves a triple surprise. First, an elderly couple who had passed over the bridge before I arrived there, looked back over the water and saw me there. They called across to warn me that there was a snake on the bridge. I surprised them because, instead of retreating as they expected me to do, I hurried toward the bridge to see it. Next, I was surprised by the size of the snake, and by its locaiton on the railing. And third, Mr.Hognose was very surprised to see me approaching, and decided not to stay.
