I really am distressed by yet another book store closing. And I hear that even Borders is supposed to close within a year. That may or may not be true, or just a rumor. I suspect it's true. They say that not only the internet, but the fact that stores like Walmart, groceries, druggists, etc., all offering books are causing it too. I find that very sad. The atmosphere of a small bookstore, or even the larger chains so long as they offer reading space and coffee, is so much nicer. And there's nothing like that little thrill when you walk into one of the cluttered, older stores, and start to hunt through the shelves and tables. The libraries are wonderful of course, but I do like owning a book that I find especially wonderful, and being able to pick it up whenever the mood strikes.
Modern merchandising seems to be taking that from us.
I so agree, Bobbie. I really hate to see stores close - especially bookstores.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately our library system in Hawaii is doing very badly. The economy has hurt us terribly. I miss our library in Illinois which was one of the best in the state. It's all so upsetting.
ReplyDeleteOh, I absolutely agree! I LOVE bookstores, but they are getting harder and harder to find and that's just one more really sad fact in our world today.
ReplyDeleteAgain another fun cartoon! I hear you about the bookstores...maybe with some of the big stores closing...some mom and pops will open again.
ReplyDeleteI feel the same way about bookstores Bobbie. There is nothing like the printed page. It's kind of hard to curl up with a laptop.
ReplyDeleteBesides, I find that most people who work in bookstores actually like books & are always helpful.
Oh well.
I agree with you. When I lived in Ohio and Borders was close, walking in the front door and smelling the "book smell" was akin to a child walking into a toy store! I loved to buy books!
ReplyDeleteI have tried to stem my habit a bit, as it did get rather pricey. But I still love books, and I do buy them occasionally. If it's true that Borders might close, I will be one sad person. :-(
Well if you find a book in the library you enjoy enough to own, you can always buy it online .. e-commerce isnt about shutting down stores but making shopping easier .. sadly its the economy that is causing small stores to close and chain stores to close those of their's that arent showing a profit or making the rent.
