Thinking Green Thursday

Tootie, of Turtle Talk With Tootie, has posted for the first time this year, and she has some interesting news. It seems that on Monday, and again on Tuesday of this week, Florida shores were visited by an endangered loggerhead turtle. The adult female weighed in at about 600 pounds. She wore a metal tag, indicating that she probably swam here from Costa Rica. She was found on Big Hickory Island in a State Park, and may or may not have nested, which would have been unusual for this time of year. She seemed to be disoriented. On the second day she was picked up by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

During the season, Tootie helps patrol the beach near her home, attempting to protect the nests of these and other endangered turtles. She often shows us some beautiful videos on her posts.

Last minute update -

In yesterday's post, Tootie has an updated report on the turtle. (They've named her Lizzie.) It has been determined that she weighs - are you ready for this? - 787 pounds! She is about 40 years old, and was actually tagged in Columbia, South America. Do follow the link to get more details.

Loggerhead Turtle Hatchlings

Thanks to our friend, Tootie, I found what I think is a delightful video of baby loggerhead turtles, leaving their nest on the Florida shore, and heading out to sea.

The loggerheads are an endangered species. It's good to see at least one nest full giving some hope. They are such cute little guys at this stage, too. Go on over here to the live cam, and watch. Then scroll down a little farther on the site and see a bit more.

Think Green Thursday

My thanks to Michele of Rambling Woods, who now hosts Think Green Thursday.


In a previous post I have mentioned Tootie, and her Turtle Talk. On Saturday she posted the news that our endangered sea turtles, the Loggerhead, pictured here,



and also the Leatherback, shown here laying her eggs in the sand, are in more grave danger.


She referred us to a news release from Earthjustice, and from the Center for Biological Diversity, to the effect that our National Marine Fisheries Service is about to change the rules. Instead of trying to preserve these wonderful animals, already in danger of extinction, they are proposing to pass laws concerning commercial swordfish longline fishing which would by all reports increase the death of these turtles by as much as three times what is already happening. The longlines also cause serious injury to the animals who are not dragged down to be drowned.

This report came out on June 19th, and the Fisheries Service is accepting public comment for 45 days. Their address is: 1315 E. West Highway, Silver Springs, Maryland 20910.

I'm going to hit you with a double whammy this week.

Remember my last week's Think Green? This one:
Well, the House of Representatives is about to vote on the power bill.

The lobbyists, such as the Coal Lobby, and the gas and oil people, are pouring on the pressure. It will be a close vote. Please, please, CALL YOUR REPRESENTATIVE.

Do it on your own, or you can call 1-877-9-737-6937 where you can get some direction and talking points.

Please don't let the bad guys win by distorting facts to influence the vote. We don't need still more rising fuel costs and further dependence on foreign oil.

Think Green Thursday #8

Gina, aka The Pagan Sphinx, and Michelle, of Rambling Woods want us to Think Green Thursday. I think that's a terrific idea. Join in. Just show us your ideas of a way to Go Green, or contribute a photo you've taken.

I can't seem to stop tooning. My tired brain hasn't come up with anything very special to post about, but I do love to toon, so here's another one. Click on it to enlarge.



I said I couldn't think of anything special to post today, but there are a few other things. For one, I would refer you to my daughter's blog, Fetal Positions. She has posted several pictures of last weekend's camping trip into Big Sur territory in California. Just a small sampling of what Mother Nature is all about, and a plea to the governor not to close the State Parks.



And, just because I think it's such a great suggestion, may I add that last week, our blog friend, Paz, told us about biodegradable bags from poopbag.com, so you can also go green when cleaning up after your dog.



Oh, yes! And while I'm at it, HAPPY WORLD OCEANS DAY ! I think it was the 8th, but it's never too late to celebrate. Do visit Michelle for a wonderful post about our oceans.



This is becoming a little ridiculous. My "nothing" post keeps growing. There are just so many wonderful people and their wonderful nature blogs! I have just visited Tootie on Sanibel Island. Her posts about sea turtles are always interesting, and today she gives us so many beautiful pictures and even videos. It would be well worth your time to visit.
