Misadventures Along the Road - Part 4

Kitty was about 9 or 10 - or 8 - or maybe 11?? She and I were headed up the Garden State Parkway toward New York. there had been some rain earlier and the road surface was slick. We were nearing Tom's River, when for some unknown reason the car ahead of us braked suddenly. That car continued on immediately and disappeared from sight, but the maneuver caused me to swerve toward the right. I skidded on the wet surface, and left the road, plowing through the mud toward the trees. It was a strange sensation. I was quite calm, and very sure that I was about to die, as I watched those trees come closer and closer. There was no fear, but I was slightly annoyed that it was going to happen about halfway between home and my destination. Someone was going to have to travel all that way to identify our bodies. How inconvenient for them.

The car came to rest, having slowed down as it plowed through the mud, with its nose resting against a tree trunk. No one hurt. No one dead. I had a feeling of anti-climax.

An elderly couple who had watched this happen, drove us to the State Police barracks to call a tow truck to get us out of the mud.

That's all. Our little brush with death.

& meanwhile the car ahead of you had no clue. What a great story Bobbie. I'm glad you lived to tell about it!

I love how calmly you tell this - that is one of my favorite things about you - such a calm, understated elegant way about you

I'm so glad you and the Kitty of many ages were OK.

I agree with Dianne, you are so calm relating this story. Your whole outlook in what you write has a marvelous calm, understated feeling and I admire that trememdously!

Glad you got okay, I/we would have missed getting to know you.

Driving experiences like that are SO scary. I remember driving on the DC beltway once and this guy and I were both trying to change lanes into the same lane ... and I just pulled gently back into the lane that I was originally driving in, but he totally freaked out and overcompensated. His car spun in circles over and over again. It was SOO scary. He didn't hit anybody or anything and he juts kept driving - but I was freaking out and it wasn't even my car!

It's good to know that you weren't hurt. I know about that calm perspective that overtakes you in a crisis. It's a rather eerie feeling, in retrospect.
